The Pennsylvania Humanities Council designated the year 1985 as "The Year of the Pennsylvania Writer." The PHC funded projects in eight locations throughout the Commonwealth to gain appreciation, understanding, and recognition for past and present Pennsylvania writers. The State College/University Park location held a two-stage conference and related events by five Centre County regional organizations. Walter H. Walters was born on December 19, 1917 in Troy, Alabama, and graduated from Troy State University in 1939 with a Bachelor of Science degree in education. He completed a master's degree in English literature in 1947 at the University of Wisconsin, a master's in fine arts in drama in 1949, and a Ph.D. in literature and drama in 1950 at Western Reserve University.
